Welcome to Gwanak Residence Halls

Dean of Gwanak Residence Halls   Professor  Suh, Eunyoung

Welcome to the website of the Gwanak Residence Halls at Seoul National University!
Situated on a site of approximately 98,000 square meters and comprising 28 buildings, the Gwanak Residence Halls form the largest residential community of its kind in Korea, accommodating more than 6,500 students, faculty, and staff. The architectural evolution of our residence halls mirrors the history of university housing in Korea. The 92X Halls, constructed in the 1980s, feature double-occupancy rooms and shared washrooms, reflecting an era focused on maximizing student accommodation capacity.
The 919 Hall, completed in the early 2000s, consists of three rooms and a shared living area per unit—an architectural design that embodies the value of community life. In 2010, the construction of the BTL Halls introduced a new paradigm of residential culture by incorporating sports facilities, large dining areas, and performance venues—transforming dormitory life beyond simple lodging into a vibrant blend of living and cultural engagement. Around this time, the term “Student Residence Halls” replaced “Dormitory.” Most recently, the Global Residence Halls (915-917) has expanded its living spaces through duplex-style units, emphasizing collaborative learning and intercultural exchange.
Amid these developments, the Gwanak Residence Halls launched the Living and Learning (LnL) initiative in 2022, piloted it in 2023, and officially began its full-scale implementation this year. This initiative marks a significant step toward holistic education that goes beyond the transmission of academic knowledge to encompass character formation, leadership development, and community engagement—fostering our students’ growth as responsible global citizens.
As Director, I am committed to ensuring that the LnL program is firmly and sustainably embedded within our residential culture. At the same time, I aim to advance key initiatives such as the reconstruction of undergraduate housing facilities built in the 1980s and the enhancement of our Residential Counseling Center’s services. Above all, I will devote my efforts to cultivating a safe, enriching, and intellectually vibrant residential village where all 6,500 members can learn, live, and thrive together.

The Gwanak Residence Halls will continue to serve as a strong foundation supporting the growth and well-being of all Seoul National University students. We sincerely appreciate your ongoing encouragement and support on this journey.
